Growing up in a two-bedroom home with six family members, I know the importance of family connection. Especially for at-risk youth, having a strong and supportive family can be essential to their development. Spending time together as a family can help young people build healthy self-esteem and develop strong interpersonal skills.

Having a two-bedroom home meant that our family was constantly interacting with each other, meaning we got to spend plenty of quality time together. This made it easier for us to communicate our feelings and build close relationships. We learned to respect each other and appreciate the diversity of our opinions and ideas.

The family connection is vital to providing at-risk youth the security and stability they need to thrive. Quality time spent together can also result in better outcomes as young people grow up into adults — helping them recognize their value and be successful in what they do. As such, I believe families need to prioritize spending quality time.

At Chiquita Jackson Enterprise, we strongly believe in the power of family bonding and know that family involvement is the foundation for a strong community. We are taking action to increase our efforts in Prince George’s County to promote community engagement and youth empowerment. Through our youth development initiative PROMISE Youth & Sports, we want families to come together and explore different activities, such as team-building activities, outings, or events that help strengthen their bond. We aim to create an environment where families can connect and build strong relationships while having fun.

We understand how important it is for families to stay connected with one another, and our actions will help empower them by offering support and guidance during these challenging times. We are developing a summer field trip series for kids and their parents to be a part of and experience the beauty of the world through STEM, Government, & Cultural Identity History. Through our initiatives, we hope that more families in Prince George’s County will enjoy spending quality time together.
